چکیده

IEEE 802.11ah Task Group is currently working on the standardization of a new amendment with the focus placed on sensor and actuator networks. It will operate at sub-1GHz bands, ensure transmission ranges up to 1 Km, minimum network data rate of 100 kbps and very low power operation. This new amendment will extend IEEE 802.11 potential to applications such as smart metering, plan automation, eHealth or surveillance. In this paper we propose a novel channel access protocol for IEEE 802.11ah WLANs based on a smart use of the Channel Access Slots (CASs), in which the Restricted Access Windows (RAWs) can be divided. More concretely, our protocol optimizes the number of CASs, their length and their allocation to the stations (STAs). The presented scheme allows both the Access Point (AP) and the STAs to properly deliver data packets in densely populated scenarios, while maximizing the time they remain in sleep mode in order to keep the energy consumption low.

Advanced Wireless Local Area Networks in the Unlicensed Sub - 1 GHz ISM - bands

This dissertation addresses the challenges of wireless local area networks (WLANs) that operate in the unlicensed sub-1GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band. Frequencies in the 900MHz spectrum enable a wider coverage due to the longer propagation characteristics of the radio waves. To utilize globally available sub-1GHz (S1G) ISM-bands, the IEEE 802.11ah Task Group started to stand...

IEEE 802.11ah: A Long Range 802.11 WLAN at Sub 1 GHz

IEEE 802.11ah is an emerging Wireless LAN (WLAN) standard that defines a WLAN system operating at sub 1 GHz license-exempt bands. Thanks to the favorable propagation characteristics of the low frequency spectra, 802.11ah can provide much improved transmission range compared with the conventional 802.11 WLANs operating at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. 802.11ah can be used for various purposes includi...

A new multichannel access protocol for IEEE 802.11 ad hoc wireless LANs

The IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs) standard supports several equal-capacity communication channels which can be simultaneously shared and accessed by mobile stations. In such multichannel communication system, a mobile station basically can transmit on any of these channels based on a suitable access control protocol. However, with the feature of one transceiver per mobile sta...

Modelling of Energy Consumption in IEEE 802.11ah Networks for M2M Traffic

IEEE 802.11ah is a sub-1 GHz standard designed to meet the requirements of future machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. The standard should be able to support use cases for the M2M communications with thousands of stations capable of generating both periodic and aperiodic traffic for a single access point. In some cases, like environmental and agricultural monitoring, the nodes are typically...
